Print this checklist and go through it the morning of every tournament. Tape it inside your chess bag.

The Night Before

• Chess clock charged or batteries checked
• Scoresheets and pencils packed
• USCF membership card or confirmation email located
• Entry confirmation found
• Uniform or comfortable clothing set out
• Directions to venue confirmed
• Departure time set (arrive at least 30 minutes early)
• Snacks and water bottle prepared

Morning of the Tournament — Before Leaving

• Chess clock
• Scoresheets
• Pencil + spare pencil
• USCF membership card / confirmation
• Water bottle (filled)
• Snacks (light — granola bar, fruit, crackers, nuts)
• Sweater or jacket
• Phone (fully charged)
• Cash (entry, snacks, parking)
• Charger or power bank
• Small chess set (optional — for between-round review)
• Any medication needed for the day

At the Venue — On Arrival

• Check in at registration
• Confirm section and player number
• Locate pairings board
• Locate restrooms
• Confirm where parents should wait
• Set clock to correct time control
• Know what round starts when

Before Each Round

• Check pairings — board number and color (White or Black)
• Use the restroom
• Drink water
• Sit down early
• Confirm clock is set
• Take a breath before the game begins

After the Last Round

• Confirm result is posted correctly
• Collect any belongings from the board
• Attend awards ceremony if applicable
• Check out with TD if required
